Noun Phrase (NP) and Verb Phrase VP)

Sebuah bacaan atau artikel biasanya terdiri dari beberapa paragraf, dan setiap paragraf terdiri dari beberapa kalimat. Unit terkecil yang bermakna dari sebuah artikel adalah kalimat. Dalam hal ini, kemampuan untuk memperkirakan arti sebuah kalimat sangat tergantung dari pengetahuan tentang hubungan antara ‘subject’ dan ‘verb’ dari sebuah kalimat.

Dalam diskusi ini saya akan membahas mengenai bagaimana memaknai sebuah kalimat dilihat dari hubungan ‘subject’ dan ‘verb’ ini.
Dalam ilmu ‘transformational grammar’, sebuah kalimat harus memiliki dua komponen, yaitu NP (Noun Phrase) atau yang lebih dikenal dengan istilah ‘subject’ dan VP (Verb Phrase). Sekarang mari kita mulai dengan kalimat sederhana dulu.
Contoh 1:
I go to school.
NP: I
VP: go to school

Contoh 2:
The man who is standing over there with a black jacket is my brother.
NP: The man who is standing over there with a black jacket
VP: is my brother
Contoh 3:
The article I wrote five years ago was published by a local magazine.
NP: The article I wrote five years ago
VP: was published by a local magazine.
Setiap kalimat harus memiliki kedua komponen ini dan setiap siswa harus mampu menentukan mana yang merupakan NP dan mana yang merupakan VP. Sekarang mari kita lihat contoh lain yang diambil dari sebuah artikel.
Contoh 4:
The marine life found in the area included 365 species of fish (two of which are found nowhere else in the world), 22 species of whales and dolphins, two species of sea turtles, and what is believed to be the world's deepest living plant.

Dari contoh ini terlihat bahwa seberapa panjang pun kalimat itu tetap harus bisa dipisahkan menjadi dua komponen, yaitu NP dan VP.
Kemampuan untuk menentukan mana yang NP dan mana yang VP juga berperan untuk melihat penggunaan ‘tense’ yang tepat untuk membuat sebuah kalimat ‘grammatically correct.
Sekarang coba Anda pisahkan kalimat berikut menjadi NP dan VP:
